This common pattern of large organisations adopting EDI, and smaller ones then joining, or forced to join, can be summed up in the phrase 'hubs and spokes'. There is a large retail organisation with several hundred different suppliers, ranging from other large organisations to very small specialist producers. This can neatly be visualised as looking rather like a bicycle wheel, with a central hub representing the large buying organisation, and the suppliers connected as spokes.
Some of the suppliers will be big organisations in their own right, with their own suppliers, and therefore may be both spokes and hubs.
