Intranet and It's CHARACTERISTICS

Introduction
An intranet is a private computer network that uses Internet protocols and network connectivity to securely share any part of an organization's information or operational systems with its employees.

Sometimes, the term refers only to the organization's internal website, but often it is a more extensive part of the organization's computer infrastructure and private websites are an important component and focal point of internal communication and collaboration.

Intranets are becoming popular, particularly in the commercial field, because:
i) The growth of the Internet has spawned sophisticated Web clients and authoring tools.

ii) Web browsers provide a familiar and consistent interface for different types of information.

iii) The client-server model enables effective integration of different systems and information across a wide range of platforms.

iv) It is very easy to publish information generated for Intranets on the Internet (as the same technology and file formats are being used).

Increasingly, intranets are being used to deliver tools and applications, e.g., collaboration (to facilitate working in groups and teleconferencing) or sophisticated corporate directories, sales and customer relationship management tools, project management, etc., to advance productivity.

Characteristics of Intranets

1) Controlled Access: Intranet should be password protected. It should allow different levels of access. Controlled access makes intranet more flexible and greatly widens the range of uses.

2) Shared Access to Documents: If intranet does not provide shared access to documents to the users, it is really not intranet.

3) Centralized Scheduling System: A centralized scheduling system ensures that everyone stays on the same page. It allows meeting and events to be scheduled from a company, department, and team level.

4) Individualization: Intranets should ideally conform to the individual user. The idea is that intranets should be comfortable and convenient for a variety of employees with a varying range of responsibilities.

5) Scalable: Web-based intranets are fully scalable. From 10 documents to 10 million, intranet can serve its constituents truly, as long as network bandwidth suffices to meet user demands.

6) Open: Web is platform neutral and global, and web browsers function as universal clients. Web technology is based on open standards and is available for almost all leading operating systems and hardware platforms, and can leverage legacy database systems.

7) Standard-Based: Internet and web technologies are based on Open Systems technology standards and have two basic promises internet network and be scalable on a global basic. ensure the viability of

Procurement Management Using Buyer's Internal Market Place

Improvements to procurement have been attempted for decades, usually by using information technologies. The real opportunity for improvement lies in the use of e-procurement, the electronic acquisition of goods and services for organisations. The general e-procurement process (with the exception of tendering) is shown in figure 2.8 .  One effective solution to the procurement problem in large organisations is to aggregate the catalogues of all approved suppliers, combining them into a single internal electronic catalogue. Prices can be negotiated in advance or determined by a tendering, so that the buyers do not have to negotiate each time they place an order. By aggregating the suppliers' catalogues on the buyer's server, it is also easier to centralise and control all procurement. Such an aggregation of catalogues is called an internal procurement marketplace .  Benefits of Internal Marketplaces   1) Corporate buyers can use search engines to look through internal aggre...

Infrastructure for EC

Introduction The e-commerce infrastructure is defined here as the supporting capabilities for online trading between multiple companies which include hardware, software, networks, online payment technologies, security and encryption technologies, online trading business models, legal and regulatory framework, and managerial and organisation capabilities.  Infrastructure is the shared human, informational , and technical resources on which the work system relies in order to operate, even though these resources exist and are managed outside of the work system.  To evaluate the interdisciplinary aspects of construction e-commerce infrastructure, one proposes using a four pillar approach. Figure 5.1 illustrates the skeleton for the proposed integrated construction e-commerce infrastructure. The proposed integrated e-business infrastructure can be broken down into the following four groups of components:  1) Technological Infrastructure : Technology infrastructure is a work...
