Intranet can be categories into following two forms:
1) Decentralized Intranets: An intranet is decentralized when more than one group within an organization creates and services a website. Very large corporations tend to have decentralized intranets, especially if the corporation does not have a department that is responsible for organizing and maintaining an intranet. There are many good reasons for having a decentralized intranet:
i) It allows a "grass-roots" approach to intranet development, so departments and groups have control over what content they want to put- up in their area.
ii) Since many groups are involved in the development of their area of the intranet, they have bought into it and are more inclined to use the entire intranet.
iii) The content of the intranet tends to change more quickly because more groups are involved with its upkeep.
2) Centralized Intranets: A centralized intranet is an intranet that has one central group (or person) who is responsible for developing the structure (both technical and informational) and maintaining the intranet. The benefit of having a centralized intranet are the following:
i) A consistent interface design, which helps usability and navigability.
ii) A consistent quality of information and frequency of updating that information.
iii) Easier maintenance from a technical perspective, because usually there is only one server or server farm.
iv) Usage levels can be low due to lack of involvement in the development process.
v) Site content can get out-of-date more easily if one group is trying to keep many different groups' content up-to-date.
vi) Growth of the intranet can be slow.
